Why We Happily Paid Four Dollars For A Grey Stone In 1975

In 1975, we literally paid $3.95 for a grey rock in a box. Yes, we were crazy!

Yes, it sounds super crazy and dumb. But surprisingly, that was the hottest and most trending gift in America for more than 6 months. It was literally a rock. Just a rock. Lol.

Pet Rock in 1970s

We paid $3.95 for it. We named it. The funny part is, we even taught it to sit. Actually, it did it. Plus, we said it to stay, and it did it perfectly as well.

Honestly, that was the best marketing scam of the era. Or maybe you can call it kind of comic relief a country needed after Watergate. You can define it as you like.

So, let me tell you the story of how a copywriter turned a bar joke into a million-dollar business by doing absolutely nothing. Just nothing.

Let’s dig in!

The Million-Dollar Idea Born in a Bar

Actually, the pet rock idea did not magically appear in a random boardroom. It was invented over beers. Yes, you read that correctly.

There was a copywriter named Gary Dahl. In April, 1975, he was drinking at a bar in Los Gatos, California.

Gary Dahl

His friends were literally complaining about their pets.

They complained that their dogs chew shoes, and their cats scratch furniture. So sad…..

Plus, they complained about their maintenance cost, basically the vet bills and food cost.

On the other hand, our main character, Dahl, felt witty and came up with the perfect solution. He literally said: “I have a pet rock”. Sounds crazy, right?

Actually, he joked. He said that his pet was ideal. No needed to be fed, walked,d or bathed. No worries at all.

Plus, it never got sick. It would never die. They all laughed so hard.

Then something happened. While his friends were waiting for the second round, Dahl’s business mind did something amazing.

He suddenly realized that if he packaged his idea of turning a normal rock into a pet rock, people might actually buy it.

Because a lot of people don’t like the maintenance cost of a pet. What an idea, right? What a man!!!

He quickly went home and started writing the manual. Hahaha. Yes, manual.

The Box With Air Holes (So It Wouldn’t Suffocate)

Actually, the product was not really a rock. It was the complete package. The BOX.

Dhal was a super genius. He knew if he just tried to sell a normal rock, people would never buy it. Because it was nothing special.

Therefore, he did the packaging part so well. It was like a luxury pet adoption service.

Next, he designed a custom cardboard with a handle. It basically looked like the ones you get from an animal shelter.

The cardboard box with a handle looked like a box with a pet inside. Amazing right?

Inside the box, he placed the grey rock. Not just that, he placed it on a cozy bed of excelsior. The bed was made of wood shelvings.

Lol. The rock would feel comfortable during the journey home. Imagine how many business ideas we have missed.

Seems every idea can be turned into a business if you do it correctly with nice packaging. There is always a market.

Not only that, he moved a step ahead and punched air holes inside the box.

But why? So, the rock could “breathe”. Lol. He literally treated rock as a living being. Just like a pet.

It was basically a grey stone sitting inside a ventilated box. Actually, this idea sold quickly before the customer even opened the lid. The packaging commited 100% to it.

The 32-Page Manual: How to Teach Your Rock to “Sit”

Yes, this product came with an instruction booklet. Amazing right? But why?

Every box came with a 32-page guide. The name of the guide was “The Care and Training of Your Pet Rock.” Actually, you can see this was a masterpiece of deadpan humor.

Rock is treated like an emotional animal. That’s it.

It said to the owners that sit and stay were the easiest commands. You know they were the easiest because the rock never moves. Lol.

“Roll Over”. This command needs special assistance from the owner. “Come” was confusing. It just couldn’t understand that.

Plus, “Attack”. Actually, you know how to do that. Owner need to physically throw the “rock pet” at a target. But you need to be careful about the consequences.

The box with rock was $4, and people paid for it. Funny right?

These Weren’t Just Driveway Gravel

Some people think Gray Dahl just went to his backyard and started packing rocks with cardboard boxes. But actually, that was wrong.

He was a genius. He knew a jagged piece of gravel wouldn’t look nice.

Therefore, he visited a builder’s supply store and found imported Rosarito Beach Stones from Mexico.

Those stones were smooth, oval, and perfectly grey. They were so pure. So, he went there and bought one rock for a penny, and he kept buying those.

Then he added the box (pennies), the manual (pennies), and the straw (pennies).

Then finally, he sold the final package for $3.95 (about $20 in today’s money).

The profit margin was so high, and he was able to make millions selling us dirt-cheap stones. Amazing right?

You know what we did? We thanked him for laughing. Lol.

The Perfect Pet

This pet rock sold so fast. It started in August 1975 and ended by Valentine’s Day 1976.

For the 6 months, it became the perfect antidote to a cynical decade. Yes, it was silly. But you know it was harmless. It was basically a joke.

It was not like the Sea Monkey that died in 3 days or the ant farm that escaped into the kitchen. The pet rock was literally a box sitting in your attic right now.

Simply following the sit command you gave it 50 years ago. Woooowww!!!!
