I think you remember that sound? Ding-ding.Remember right?
You’d pull your station wagon into the Texaco, your tires would roll over that black rubber hose. Yes, today, I’m gonna tell you about our lovely gas station service.

So, like that, you were the most important and popular person in town. Awesome right? yes I know that feeling. Lol. Trust me, you’re gonna love this trip down memory lane.
You didn’t even get out of the car. Seriously! You didn’t have to stand in the freezing rain or argue with a credit card machine asking for your zip code.
Okay, this part is genius. You simply rolled down the window and said three magic words: “Fill’er up.”
Quick note: I tried to explain this to a teenager last week. They literally didn’t believe me. It took 30 seconds to blow their mind.
Why was it so much better?
- No heavy lifting: You stayed warm and dry.
- The Service: Someone actually checked your oil and wiped your windshield.
- The Price: It felt like a steal.
So, are you wondering if it was actually faster back then? Actually, it probably was. No apps, no rewards points. Just pure service. Right?
Today, getting gas is a lonely, cold chore. Basically, it’s just you versus a screen. But back then? Basically, it was a pit stop worthy of a Formula 1 team. Let me tell you, for a few minutes, you were treated like royalty.
Most people don’t realize how much we lost when we traded service for “convenience.”
Hold on….This one is the kicker. All that royal treatment? It cost you about 35 cents a gallon.
Yep, that’s all you needed. Cheaper than a cup of coffee today but it felt a whole lot fancier. This one’s definitely my favorite era of driving.

The Uniformed Welcoming Committee
So, the man pumping your gas wasn’t just “some guy” in a hoodie. You know the type. Staring at his phone. Ignoring you.
This guy was different. He was a professional.
You’re gonna love this visual. He wore a crisp uniform. A matching cap. Even a bowtie. Lol, can you imagine seeing a bowtie at a gas station today?
His name was stitched right on the pocket. Maybe it was “Hank.” Or “Buddy.”
And he always had a clean rag in his back pocket. Always. Trust me, this matters.
He didn’t walk to your car. He ran fast as hell. As soon as your tires stopped? He was there. Smiling.
Okay… this next part is wild. Sometimes you got lucky. It was a two man job.
One guy handled the nozzle at the back. The other guy worked on the front.
- Checked the oil.
- Wiped the glass.
- Done.
So fast! It was basically a NASCAR pit crew. But for your family sedan. Hahaha.
“Regular or Ethyl?” he’d ask. Or maybe, “Check the oil today, boss?”
Wondering why it felt so different back then? They actually took pride in the station. The concrete was scrubbed. The pumps were polished.
Actually, the service was genuine.

The “Under the Hood” Ritual
So, today nobody looks under the hood. Like, ever.
Not until that scary red light starts flashing on the dashboard. Right?
But back then? Every fill up was a mini checkup for your engine. You’re gonna love this routine.
You pulled the latch. The heavy steel hood popped up. The attendant dove in.
He wasn’t just looking around. He was on a mission. Okay… watch this.
He’d pull the dipstick. Wipe it clean with that trusty rag. Then dip it again. He presented it to you like a waiter showing off a wine cork. Lol. “Looks a little dark, ma’am.” Or maybe just. “You’re down a quart.”
Wondering if people actually listened? Oh yeah. We trusted them implicitly.
Hold on. Think about that. If “Mac” said the fan belt looked loose? We fixed it. If the radiator needed water? We added it.
Right then and there. They checked everything.
- Battery water
- Windshield fluid
- Even gave the hoses a squeeze
Literally, this is the part I miss the most. It was total peace of mind. The Best… And it just cost the price of a can of Pennzoil.

The Windshield Washed (Properly)
So, there were no buckets of murky blue water. You know the kind. Waiting for you with a torn squeegee. Gross.
The attendant came prepared. He had his own spray bottle. And a clean towel.
Actually, he didn’t just do a quick swipe on the driver’s side. Just enough so you could see the traffic light. Nope. He walked all the way around the car.
Okay… pause. Do this. Imagine that level of service today. Lol. Impossible. He scrubbed the bugs off the headlights. He wiped the side mirrors. Sometimes he’d even hit the rear window!
Especially if he was gunning for a tip. Hahaha. You just sat inside. Warm. Dry. Watching the suds disappear.
Honestly, this was the best feeling. It was a small act. But it made you feel taken care of.
Wondering what we have now? Today you’re lucky if the squeegee in the bucket has any rubber left on it at all. Basically, good luck with that.
The Lonely Beep of the Chip Reader
So, we traded the “Ding-Ding.” For the “Beep-Beep.” You know the sound.
Now you stand alone in the cold. Fighting with a screen. It asks for your zip code. Like, why do you need that? Then it tries to sell you a car wash. 🥶
OMG, honestly, it’s annoying. I don’t want the car wash. Lol.
There is no conversation. No “How are the folks?” No weather report from a guy named Bud. Just the silent hum of the pump. And the smell of exhaust.
Hold on. This is the sad part. We gained speed. Sure. Convenience too. But we lost the human connection. Right?
The road got a little lonelier. Literally, when we started pumping our own gas. Has anyone else feel this way?
We want to know your gas station memories! Let me know in the comments. Curious what you say about it!
