No need to get confused, let me tell you. It was the Twenty-One show. Now you can remember, right? Plus, most of you might know what I’m about to tell you.
The start was Charles Van Doren. Yes, I know he was handsome, polite, and brilliant. No doubt about that, right?
But can you remember the moment he stood in the glass isolation booth, wiping his sweat from his elbow, and panicked over a complex trivia question? You remember right?
We simply cheered for the college professor to win the grand prize.
But unfortunately, they tricked us. It was all a huge mirage. Basically, we were not looking at some genius.
He was just an actor who followed the script. All the answers were in his pocket.
That night, finally, the truth was revealed. It was not only became teh reason to cancel the TV show but also broke the trust between America and its good old days. How sad!
So, let’s talk about it!
The Sweaty Genius in the Isolation Booth
As you can remember, the tension in that moment was suffocating.
Producers intentionally turned off the air conditioning inside the famous glass “Isolation Booth”. Can’t be real, right?
Producers wanted contestants to sweat and wanted to make viewers deeply think about what happened.
Finally, Charles Van Doren delivered teh message.
He would bite his lip, shutter and look up at the ceiling lights nervously.
As soon as he delivered the final message, the audience literally erupted. It was completely a masterclasss acting.
America literally turned upside down for the Columbia University instructor because he was considered as teh superman who arrived to defeat the reigning champion.
He was Herb Stempel. He was brilliant but awkward. Producers knew fans didn’t like him much.
Plus, they knew Van Doren should play the superhero act, and they wanted him to win. So, they scripted the show.
The Whistleblower Nobody Believed
As you know, every good drama needs a villain, right? In Marvel Avengers, it was Thanos. In DC, it was Darkseid.
Likewise, for the Twenty-One, it was Herb Stempel. He was the reigning champion. Yes, he was obviously smart, sure. But he was arrogant and unlikable. That’s how he was. But unfortunately, producers used him and took that as their advantage.
Once the ratings were down, the bosses told Stempel his tieme was up. Basically, he was asked a simple question about a movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Stempel knew the answer was Marty. He was genious. He was forced to say On the Waterfront. That’s how producers pressured him. Poor man.
But he became furious because he knew the golden boy Van Doren going to shine, not because of his skill but because procers wanted him to win.
Suddenly, Stempel went to the press and told everyone, “It’s all rigged! I was given the answers!” What a moment, right?
Just imagine what happened next? Pure drama!!!!
Once everyone heard the truth, everyone got silenced. Basically, it sounded like sour grapes from a sore loser. We didn’t want to believe him.
Who could think it was all scripted, right? We loved the show.
We all preferred the handsome professor, not that arrogant man. We thought he was just jealous.
Surprisingly, the newspaper buried the story for a while, and the charade continued. Woow just Woow!
The Envelope, Please (The Answers Were Inside)
However, the truth can’t be hidden. Finally, it came out. No, it was not a confession from anyone. It was because of a notebook. Yes, you read that correctly.
Since noone listened to Stempel, a standby contestant on another show, Dotto found a notebook which belonged to the current winner. Woow right?
He saw how answers to every question were written down. Finally, the smoking gun had been found.
Then, the District Attorney got involved, and the case opened again. The investigation showed a system of cheating in that show.
It was basically a full-blown choreography. Absolute drama!
Producers got caught, but they didn’t provide clear answers to the people. They simply provided the script.
The script had how contestants should dress, how to hold breath to build suspense, and which wrong answer should give before remembering the right one at the last second. How unethical, right? So bad. They tricked us.
However, the entire industry was implicated. From The $64,000 Question to Twenty-One, the “reality” we were attached to was as scripted as a soap opera. Just drama!
“I Was Involved, Deeply Involved”
Based on reports I analyzed, the drama was not set in the game room. It was in a Congressional hearing room in 1959.
Charles Van Doren, the main character, was idolized before the House Special Subcommittee. He was literally pale and visibly shaken.
He had to lie to the press, to his fans, and even to his family. How sad, right? But finally, under oath, he broke. Finally!
Based on the prepared statement, he said the line that shocked the entire country. He said: “I was involved, deeply involved in a deception.” How sad right?
He was pressed and admitted to everything. Answers were given, and he was pressured and coached on how to act in front of the camera.
Millions of fans cheered for him. But actually, he was a fraud. It was pure humiliating. However, in the end, the perfect American son lied to us for money.
The Trust We Never Got Back
After the incident, twenty-One was cancelled. Congress brought a new law making it leegal to fix quiz shows. That was the good side.
However, the Golden Age of big money trivia was ended. But the damage as emotional.
Before 1956, we thought everything that showed on TV was real. But after Van Doren, there were trust issues.
Nowadays, we match many reality shows, and we deeply know they are staged. People who remember the Wednesday nights of the 1950s, the Twenty-One know how it suddenly broke our hearts.
